MANAGING THE NITROGEN CYCLE

What is the Nitrogen Cycle?

  • Nitrogen is found just about everywhere on Earth.

  • It plays a primary role in the production of food in plants.

  • Just like everything else, nitrogen must go through a cycle, however it is not naturally broken up easily. Allowing for a build up in excess nitrogen.

What is the Problem?

  • Production of excess nitrogen by humans has disrupted the natural cycle.

  • This adds to smog, contaminates drinking water, produces acid rain, causes water pollution, and reduces the ozone layer.

What is Causing the Problem?

  • Use of fertilizers

  • Burning of fossil fuels

  • Farming
