MANAGING THE NITROGEN CYCLE
What is the Nitrogen Cycle?
-
Nitrogen is found just about everywhere on Earth.
-
It plays a primary role in the production of food in plants.
-
Just like everything else, nitrogen must go through a cycle, however it is not naturally broken up easily. Allowing for a build up in excess nitrogen.
What is the Problem?
-
Production of excess nitrogen by humans has disrupted the natural cycle.
-
This adds to smog, contaminates drinking water, produces acid rain, causes water pollution, and reduces the ozone layer.
What is Causing the Problem?
-
Use of fertilizers
-
Burning of fossil fuels
-
Farming
